NEXT will be the next key shop to close doors in a Sligo store, staff learned over the weekend.
It is planning to quit the Quayside Shopping Centre in May.
The shock news comes as the chain store has moved well into its second decade of Quayside trading.
Central to the Next crux could be the terms of a new lease.
This offers the possibility of NEXT opening elsewhere in the town centre.
Meanwhile Australian retailer Harvey Norman is planning a new store in Sligo Town.
The CEO of the Irish arm of the furnishings and electrical chain, Blaine Callard, confirmed that the company is in advanced talks for leases in Sligo and Galway. The new stores are likely to employ dozens of staff between them.
Harvey Norman spent about €6m opening a flagship store in Tallaght, south Dublin, last year, in a premises that it owns and developed itself. "We are certainly looking to expand our Irish retail network with several more stores over the next few years," said Mr Callard. He has previously signalled that Harvey Norman could open five or six new outlets in Ireland. It currently has 13.
