Preparations underway for Sligo Super Cup

Two top coaches from the Derby County Academy visited Sligo last week on a reconnaissance mission ahead of their participation in this  year’s Sligo Super Cup, which takes place at the Showgrounds on the May Bank Holiday Weekend, 4th-6th.

Derby are one of eight teams lined up for the second running of this exciting elite under-12 tournament which proved to be an outstanding success in its inaugural year.

Joining the top English Championship club’s youngsters this year will be academy teams from Ipswich Town, Sheffield Wednesday (making a return visit to Sligo), Chesterfield, Glenavon, Mayo, hosts Sligo/Leitrim and the Dublin&District Schoolboys League, who will be defending the title they won so impressively last year.

Derby County’s Head of Academy Operations, Mr. John Barton, a former Everton and Derby right back from the 1980’s, was hugely impressed with the preparations and the standard of facilities in Sligo.

“The Showgrounds is a magnificent stadium, and it will be a great thrill for our young lads to play there.  It will be something new for the kids to play in such a big ground in a competitive atmosphere, and it will really test them. We’re really excited about this tournament,” Mr.Barton said.

'Comfort zone'

Tom Crisp, the coach who will guide the Derby youngsters at the Sligo tournament, told why it’s important for academy teams to compete in this type of event.

“We take in kids from eight years onwards, and it’s a very structured development pathway. It’s good to take them out of their comfort zone, to test them against other academies and to see them take on the responsibility of playing away from their normal environment.  We’re looking forward to taking them to Sligo,” he explained.

The tournament will feature sixteen matches over three action-packed days. The draw for the group stage games takes place at County Hall on Thursday, April 12th, and will be broadcast on OceanFM the following evening.
