Garda dies on duty at Clifden Garda Station

Communities across Connemara are in shock today following the sudden death of an on-duty Garda at Clifden Garda Station.

Shane Cuffe, a nephew of acting Garda Commissioner Dónal Ó Cualáin, died at work yesterday morning.

Garda Cuffe, Originally from the village of Moycullen, near Galway city, is understood to have been in his late 30s and was a member of an Garda Siochana for 13 years.

He was married and had two young children.

There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death as  it is believed he may have suffered a heart attack.

Following the death, a file will now be prepared for the local coroner for an inquest.

A post-mortem examination is also expected to take place to establish the exact cause of death.

A spokesman for the Garda Representative Association (GRA) said: "The GRA is awaiting full details of this tragic event."
