Fine Gael TD for Sligo - Leitrim, and Assistant Whip, Tony McLoughlin, has said that a new rural bus service for North Sligo and South Donegal, which will be launched in May 2018 will help to further connect rural communities in the region and it is yet another welcome development for people who live in these areas.
‘Local Link’ the company selected to provide the new service by ‘Transport Infrastructure Ireland’ will operate from Sligo via Rathcormac, Drumcliff (Yeats Grave), Carney, Lisadell House, Maugherow, Ballinfull, Streedagh, Grange, Cliffoney, Mullaghmore, Tullaghan Village, Bundoran, Ballyshannon to Rossnowlagh.
The new route will cater for both local and tourist traffic and provide regular connectivity from Rossnowlagh which has not had a regular bus service for years and Mullaghmore which never had a bus service. It will also complement the existing Bus Eireann services along the N15.
This service follows on from the very successful launch of Local Link Service 983 (Kinlough -Bundoran-Ballyshannon) which has catered for over 20000 passengers journeys in its first year of operation (launched 13th March 2017).
Welcoming the roll out of the new bus services, Deputy McLoughlin said: “This new service will help to further connect our local communities in the area. A regular and reliable transport network provides a vital lifeline for those living in rural areas, especially for elderly residents who often have no other alternative.
“This service will have an immediate positive impact on the lives of people in every community along the route, giving residents in rural villages increased access to utilities like doctors, banks, shops and Bus Eireann services, as well as other social outlets. It will also help enhance the lives of our older people who don’t have access to a car, as well as connecting younger residents with transport links to college and work.
“Fine Gael is committed to expanding the public bus service in rural Ireland and this announcement today is just one of many commitments to rural Ireland over the past number of months."
