Councillor raises concern over Court Abbey Cemetery monument

The Monument which is an old Franciscan Friary located in Court Abbey Cemetery is a cause of safety concern to the community and to families of loved ones buried in the vicinity.

Independent Cllr Margaret Gormley said, "that on the 21st August 2017 the Minister responsible for the office of the OPW Minister Kevin Boxer Moran visited the site and witnessed for himself the dangerous state itís in and the need to have works carried out to it.

"It was pointed out to him that the local authority were not in a position to carry out such an assessment due to lack of funding.

"He did request that it be established who the owners are and once he had that information that his department would provide the funding to carry out a study as to what needs to be done to make it safe."

Cllr Gormley added, "This commitment was made in the presence of Deputies Scanlon(FF) and McLoughlin (FG), local councillors including myself Cllrs Mulvey (FG) and Lundy (FF) together with members of the local community."

At the April meeting of Sligo County Council this week Cllr Gormley tabled a motion calling on the Minister to honour his commitment and provide the funding to carry out the assessment.

The Council's Director of Services Tom Kilfeather informed the meeting that it would take in the region of Ä20-25 thousand to carry out such an assessment.
