A French touch in Special Olympics Connaught

Valentine CÚrato a French Erasmus student from the BB in Marketing at IT Sligo taking the volunteering module is currently at Special Olympics Connaught and is linked to Special Olympics Ireland.

Special Olympics is an international sport organisation for people with an intellectual disability. Through sport, athletes have the opportunity to develop their physical fitness and win in confidence with the other members. It is a huge community present in 170 countries around the world.

The Connaught office is based in Sligo and brings together 1,300 sporty adults and children from all the region. Around 13 Olympics type sports are organised annually in the context of competitions.

Valentine helps the team as a volunteer utilising her marketing skills in a practical way. Supported by Brieffni Gorman from the charity and her lecturer Joanna Sweeney, she is in charge of the event promotion.

She said "It is a very rewarding experience to work with this charity. The marketing and communication role is to help make the association known and to engage people, but it is above all to relay the joy and happiness of these incredible athletes".

A lot of events are organised, the 2018 event program is available from the website www.specialolympics.ie and the Facebook page.

There was a Collection Day on Friday, 20th of April, the 5 Peaks Challenge the 12th & 13th of May, The Superhero Day on October, and then, the annual Polar Plunge in December.

This is a great opportunity for Valentine to learn about the charity sector in Ireland and perfect her marketing skills all while meeting new people and potential networks are developing.

The volunteering module is an unique subject and is offering students credit for engaging with volunteering opportunities in Ireland while studying here. For more information log into http://www.itsligo.ie or email: higgins.ann@itsligo.ie
