Canney weighs up political options following scrapping of junior ministry rotation
The future of Sean Canney in the Independent Alliance remains in doubt as he continues to weigh up his political options.
According to RTÉ
the Galway East TD is still considering what to do after a row in the group over the rotation of a junior ministry.
The alliance decided last week that Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran should remain as Minister of State for the Office of Public Works for the rest of the duration of the Government.
It is understood that Mr Canney believed this was at odds with what was agreed in 2016, when the Government was formed.
Mr Canney had been appointed to the role for the first year of the minority Government and then was replaced by Mr Moran a year later.
However, with the Government set to enter its third year in office, Mr Canney thought the job should rotate again.
Yesterday, Mr Canney held a private meeting with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.
The meeting took place against the backdrop of speculation that Mr Canney could defect from the alliance and continue to support Government.
Some sources are suggesting that Mr Canney, who is a chartered quantity surveyor, may seek some non-ministerial role at the Department of Housing.
