While the property market has not yet bounced back, one Sligo auctioneer has carved out a unique niche in Sligo property by selling plots or allotments of land bordering on the scenic Lough Gill.
Bjorn Schiller, of Schiller and Schiller Auctioneers, came up with the novel idea of marketing 'recreational plots' having seen the system prosper in parts of mainland Europe.
A first for Ireland, the plots are being sold for approximately €4,950 each, the largest are on the market at €7,750. They are situated at Trawane Bay, a local beauty spot on the shore of the lake imortalised in poems by Yeats, and dominated by views of Benbulben.
About the size of an average decent family house garden the plots cannot be built on however the owners can have bar-b-ques, camp outs or just sit and chill out on their property. There is no water or sanitary facilities on-site, however there is a public car park and public toilet at a nearby lake viewing point.
Ideal for boat owners, a public jetty and a slipway can be used by the plot owners and with Sligo town only a 10-minute speedboat ride away it offers an ideal brief retreat from city and town dwelling at a low cost.
The plots are part of the estate owned by the Schiller family who have been in the property business since the '80s when they were heavily involved in selling Irish properties and land to German buyers.

The company website showing photos of the plots on offer poses the questions:
Have you ever wanted to own a piece of lakeshore property for your family and yourself to enjoy? Are you living near a lake and wanted to own your own ground and access onto the water?
Are you living in a city with no green around you and miss that your children have no connection to nature? Are you living far away from water and like the outdoor lifestyle, camping?
Do want to invite your friends to a BBQ on your own lakeshore property?
Do you like watersports, etc?
The list goes on but if you can say YES to any of the above then these land allotments represent a terrific opportunity for you.
They are located on the shores of Sligo’s Lough Gill at Trawane Bay near the famous Isle of Innisfree. The area is designated as area of natural beauty.
The allotments vary in size from 548m2 to 710m2, are approx 10m wide and all enjoy their own lake frontage. The lakeshore in this particular bay is particular shallow and very suitable for non- swimmers and children.
