Fianna Fáil must review hedge cutting proposal - IFA

IFA’s Environment Chairman Thomas Cooney and Rural Development Chairman Joe Brady met with Fianna Fáil’s Heritage spokesperson Niamh Smyth today and emphasised the need to review the party’s proposal to limit the hedge-cutting pilot project to roadside hedges.

Thomas Cooney said, “Government is proposing a two-year pilot project, to inform future policy decisions around hedge-cutting and gorse burning. However, it is being portrayed as a permanent change and this is wrong.”

Joe Brady renewed IFA’s call on Fianna Fáil to continue their support for the proposal to introduce this two-year pilot project, which would allow for a more managed approach to hedge cutting during August along roadside hedges and at time of cereal sowing and grass reseeding.

Further meetings will take place with Fianna Fáil elected representatives, in advance of the Seanad debate next week.
