Following sell-out performances in the US and shows in both Dublin and Limerick, the critically acclaimed 'this is an Irish dance'
is coming to Sligo!
Choreographed by world renowned dancer and choreographer Jean Butler and composed by Belfast-born composer and musician Neil Martin, this duet for dancer and cellist will be reimagined for two special performances in the Models East Gallery, on Sunday 1st October at 5pm & 7pm.
The performances are part of a new series of music curated by composer and musician Emer Mayock, which will run throughout autumn and winter 2017 at the Model. Speaking ahead of the event curator Emer Mayock said “It is a pleasure to present the work of dancer Jean Butler and musician Neil Martin in two specially re-imagined performances of this is in an Irish dance in the intimacy of the east gallery at The Model.
Butler’s duet, this is an Irish dance, created with cellist Neil Martin is illustrative of the core idea of the Undercurrents series- the contrasting means by which artists interpret, compose and improvise with traditional and folk as the leading influence.
This is a unique opportunity to experience the dialogue between music and movement, dancer and musician, the contemporary and traditional, the dancer and the dance.”
The Undercurrents series aims to shine a light on the diverse means by which artists take this path of reinterpretation, infusing knowledge, influence and creative imagination. The series features a distinct range of contemporary folk artists each exploring their contrasting influences and approaches to song, dance or music; while also challenging audiences’ perceptions of the genre. Further nights confirmed include Jazz pianist Francesco Turrisi with traditional singer Róisín Elsafty and special guest Emer Mayock on Fri 10 Nov and Dublin Folk Miscreants Lankum who will perform at The Model on Sat. 02 Dec. at 8pm.
