Ex Sligo Rovers duo decide the Cup

TWO PLAYERS who starred with Sligo Rovers in the past fifteen months walked away with FÁI Cup winners medals at teatime yesterday, Sunday.

Not just that: The goals scored by Achille Campion and Kieran Sadlier took the trophy.

Their efforts brought the first League and Cup double to the Leeside for the first time since 1951.

Kieran Sadlier left for Cork during the summer at a time when he was coasting to be Sligo Rovers 2017 Player of the Year.

On Parade

Indeed a slew of former Showgrounds stars were on parade for the 24,000 patrons in the Aviva Stadium yesterday.

These included Gary Rodgers and David Macmillan for Dundalk, and for Cork City Jimmy Keohane, Steven Beattie and of course the scorers Sadlier and Campion.

It was Sadlier who bridged the gap after 66 years, with a penalty.

That was scored just before 6pm, after 120 minutes of football had failed to separate the sides.

It was the first decider on penalties since Sligo Rovers ousted Shelbourne in 2011.

For the winner, Sadlier placed his kick low and hard to the keeper’s right hand.....but goalie Gary Rodgers never had a chance of getting any hand to it.

The man who’d sent the 2017 Daily Mail FÁI Cup Final down to five penalties was another ex Showgrounds star,  Achille Campion.

Like Sadlier, he had come off the substitutes bench late in the game.

There was just nine minutes left in extra time when the Frenchman struck gold.

Campion killed and controlled a through pass into the penalty box on his chest and beat the offside trap in the same seamless moments. 1-1.

The rest became history.
